Working Towards Sustainability: Pages 96-97

The reading from page 96.

1.) In addition to helping the environment, what factors do you think help motivate the golf course operators to join the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program?

Some of the factors that help motivate the golf course operators to join the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program are a decrease in maintenance costs, chemical applications, and time spent mowing grass, low pest populations and pesticide usage, and better overall health for course grass.

2.) Is the high use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides on golf courses justified by the fact that it brings people to enjoy and appreciate nature?

The high use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides on golf courses are not justified by the fact that it brings people to enjoy and appreciate nature. The financial and environmental costs of maintaining a golf course far outweigh personal enjoyment. Although it is good for people to enjoy nature, their appreciation is meaningless if nature has to be destroyed in order for them to experience it. It would be better if they left it alone altogether.
