The Prospect of Perennial Crops & Science Applied FRQ

1. Some of the disadvantages of annual crops are that they need to be planted every year since they only live one season and that they therefore cause a lot of disruption to the soil.

2. The difficulties in developing perennial crops are that they often need to be bred in labs in order to mimic the natural world and that it may take decades before the seeds can provide usable produce.

a.) The principle of succession can be used to generate a sustainable organic farm by creating an environment that can control itself through competition and facilitation. This is beneficial because organic farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides on their crops, so such a principle could help them keep their farm sustainable.
b.) Three methods of reducing soil erosion include no-till agriculture, sustainable crops, and crop rotation.
c.) Integrated pest management is a tactic used by organic farmers in which they try to control pests without synthetic pesticides.
d.) Two ways that this risk can be reduced are the government giving financial benefit for organic farming and lowering the price of organic pest repellents.
